## Abstract

Diketones of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl, perfluoroalkyl or alkoxy, each of 1-18 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is alkyl or perfluoroalkyl, each of 1-12 carbon atoms; and X is 1,4-trans-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or 4,4'-cyclohexylphenyl are liquid crystalline compounds.

## Claims

### Claim 1

A liquid crystal dielectric, comprising at least two liquid crystal components, at least one being a diketone of the formula ##STR17## wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl, perfluoroalkyl or alkoxy, each of 1-18 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is alkyl or perfluoroalkyl, each of 1-12 carbon atoms; and X is 1,4-trans-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or 4,4'-cyclohexylphenyl.

### Claim 2

A composition comprising a diketone of the formula ##STR18## wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl, perfluoroalkyl or alkoxy, each of 1-18 carbon atoms; R.sub.2 is alkyl or perfluoroalkyl, each of 1-12 carbon atoms; and X is 1,4-trans-cyclohexylene, 1,4-phenylene or 4,4'-cyclohexylphenyl and a liquid crystal dielectric doping agent or dichroitic dye.

### Claim 3 (depends on 1)

A liquid crystal dielectric of claim 1 wherein the diketone is of the formula ##STR19## wherein R.sub.1 is alkyl of 1-18 carbon atoms and R.sub.2 is alkyl or perfluoroalkyl, each of 1-12 carbon atoms.

A liquid crystalline dielectric of claim 1 wherein the diketone is of the formula ##STR20##

### Claim 5 (depends on 1)

A liquid crystalline dielectric of claim 1 wherein the diketone is of the formula ##STR21##

### Claim 6 (depends on 1)

A liquid crystalline dielectric of claim 1 wherein in the diketone R.sub.2 is C.sub.1-8 alkyl.

### Claim 7 (depends on 1, 3, 4, 5)

In an electro-optical display element having a liquid crystal cell comprising a liquid crystal dielectric, the improvement wherein the dielectric is that of claim 1, 3, 4 or 5.
