Abstract
A process for converting anisoles to ortho-methylated phenolic products in high selectivity is disclosed. The process comprises passing methoxybenzene, o-methylmethoxybenzene, 2,6-dimethylmethoxybenzene, or mixtures thereof, over gamma-alumina in the presence of an effective amount of water at a temperature in the range of about 225.degree. to about 295.degree. C.
Claims9
A process for converting a feedstock comprising methoxybenzene, o-methylmethoxybenzene, 2,6-dimethylmethoxybenzene, or mixtures thereof, to a product mixture containing o-cresol and 2,6-xylenol in high selectivity, said process comprising passing the feedstock in vapor phase over an effective amount of gamma-alumina in the presence of an effective amount of water at a temperature in the range of about 225.degree. to about 295.degree. C., said process being characterized further in that the amount of water, based on the feedstock, is in the range of about 0.5 to about 10 weight percent.
