Abstract
Hypoglycemic 5-furyl and 5-thienyl derivatives of oxazolidine-2,4-dione and the pharmaceutically-acceptable salts thereof; certain 3-acylated derivatives thereof; and intermediates useful in the preparation of said compounds.

A method of lowering the blood glucose in a hyperglycemic mammal which comprises administering a blood glucose lowering amount of a compound of the formula ##STR12## wherein R is hydrogen, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkanoyl, benzoyl, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)-carbalkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)-alkylcarbamoyl or di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)-alkylcarbamoyl;
- Y is sulfur or oxygen;
- X is hydrogen, fluoro, chloro, bromo, iodo, methyl, phenyl, benzoyl, or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.3)-alkoxy;
- X.sup.1 is hydrogen or methyl;
- and
- X.sup.2 is hydrogen, fluoro, bromo, chloro or iodo;
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable cationic salt thereof when R is hydrogen.
