Abstract
Catalysts comprising the mixed oxides of ruthenium, copper, at least one alkali metal and at least one of rhodium, iridium, palladium, and platinum are provided which are useful in the upgrading of synthesis gas, particularly for obtaining alkanes and alcohols.

A process for the upgrading of synthesis gas to obtain selectivity to alkanes and alcohols comprising contacting carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the vapor phase at a reaction temperature of at least 250.degree. C. and a reaction pressure of at least 500 psi with a catalyst of the formula
- A.sub.a Ru.sub.b Cu.sub.c M.sub.d N.sub.z O.sub.x
- wherein
- A is an alkali metal, wherein
- M is Rh, Ir, Pd, Pt or mixtures thereof and wherein
- a is about 0.02 to about 0.5,
- b is about 0.5 to about 3,
- c is about 0.5 to about 3,
- d is about 0.05 to about 0.5,
- z is a level of 0 to about 1 weight % and
- x is the number of oxygens needed to fulfill the valence requirements of the other elements.
