Ammonia compounds improve zinc dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate compositions and processes for their preparation.

An improved process for the preparation of a zinc dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate composition that provides lubricants with resistance to corrosion, wear and oxidation, which comprises reacting a dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphoric acid, a zinc compound and an effective neutralization reaction catalytic amount of ammonia or an ammonia-yielding compound.
