A gold electroplating bath comprising heterocyclic organic compounds such as lactones, lactams, cyclic sulfate esters, cyclic imides and cyclic oxazolinones.

A process for electroplating metallic substances consisting essentially of gold comprising the step of passing current through an anode, aqueous plating solution and cathode characterized in that the plating bath comprises an heterocyclic additive consisting essentially of phenolphthalein.
