Abstract
A novel 4'-(.beta.-alkyloxyethoxy)-4-cyanobiphenyl represented by the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R represents a straight alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, which is useful as one component of liquid crystal composition having positive dielectric anisotropy.

A 4'-(.beta.-alkyloxyethoxy)-4-cyanobiphenyl represented by the general formula:
- ##STR4## wherein R represents a straight alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
A liquid crystal material for a display cell comprising as an essential component a 4'-(.beta.-alkyloxyethoxy)-4-cyanobiphenyl represented by the general formula:
- ##STR5## wherein R represents a straight alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms.
