Abstract
An apparatus for continuously manufacturing finely divided magnesium, and similar metals, in which a liquid stream of magnesium ejected from a nozzle is impacted by a high velocity stream of inert gas to "atomize" the liquid magnesium, including means for the intermittent entrainment of an abrasive powder in the inert gas stream to remove the build-up of solid magnesium or magnesium compounds that otherwise would collect on the end of the nozzle and interfere with continuous operation of the "atomizing" process.
Claims7
Apparatus for manufacturing magnesium powder comprising:
- a chamber containing an inert gas;
- a first nozzle for projecting a stream of molten magnesium into said chamber;
- a second nozzle for projecting a stream of inert gas into said chamber to impinge upon and atomize the molten magnesium stream into droplets which then cool and solidify to form magnesium powder;
- and
- means for introducing into said inert gas stream an abrasive comprising an oxide of magnesium for removing or dislodging build up deposits of solidified magnesium accumulated at the exit of the magnesium stream nozzle.
An apparatus for the continuous manufacture of an oxidizable metal powder comprising, a nozzle for forming a liquid jet of the said metal in its molten state, a nozzle for forming a gas jet of helium or argon gas which impinges upon the molten liquid jet to atomize the same and form droplets of the molten metal which then solidify to form a powder of said oxidizable metal, said gas jet being so positioned as to strike the tip of the nozzle which forms the liquid jet, and means for introducing a finely divided solid abrasive into said argon or helium gas jet upstream of the point where said gas jet strikes the liquid jet, to prevent build up of solid deposits of said metal on said nozzles.
In an apparatus for creating droplets of molten metal by the impingement of a gas jet upon a liquid jet of said molten metal, in which said liquid molten metal jet is formed by a first nozzle opening and said gas jet is formed by a second nozzle opening concentric with said first nozzle opening, the improvement which comprises, a container for holding a quantity of an oxide of said metal in powdered solid form, and means for feeding periodically from said container into the stream of said gas which passes through second nozzle opening said metal oxide powder in quantities sufficient to prevent build up of solid deposits around said first nozzle opening of the molten liquid metal passing therethrough.
Apparatus for the continuous production of a reactive solid metal power comprising:
- a melting chamber for holding and heating said metal to liquify the same;
- a first nozzle for forming a jet of the said liquified metal into a chamber containing a gas which is inert with respect to said liquified metal;
- a second nozzle for forming a jet of said gas which passes over the tip of said first nozzle and intersects said liquid metal jet and breaks up the same to form a spray of droplets of said liquified metal in said chamber which droplets solidify to form said powder;
- a source of gas for supplying said inert gas to said second nozzle under a pressure which is substantially higher than the pressure of the gas in said chamber;
- and
- a chamber for holding a finely divided solid abrasive having means associated therewith for feeding said abrasive at a selected rate of flow either intermittently or continuously, into said inert gas at a point upstream of the point where said inert gas passes over the tip of said first nozzle.
