Abstract
A process and apparatus for treating thiosulfate containing liquors such as coke oven gas scrubbing liquors in two stages of wet oxidation with intermediate removal of elemental sulfur. Mild oxidation conditions in the first stage results in conversion of thiosulfate sulfur to elemental sulfur, which is removed prior to second stage wet oxidation of the liquors to substantially reduce the liquor oxygen demand.
Claims14
A process for treating thiosulfate containing liquors by wet oxidation, comprising the steps of:
- a. subjecting said thiosulfate containing liquors to a first wet oxidation step at a temperature sufficient to oxidize a portion of said thiosulfate to sulfuric acid and sulfate and to decompose remaining thiosulfate to sulfite and elemental sulfur;
- b. concentrating and removing said elemental sulfur from the wet oxidized liquors of step (a);
- and
- c. subjecting the wet oxidized liquors from step (b) to a second wet oxidation step at a temperature sufficient to achieve substantial destruction of sulfur, organic matter and other oxidizable substances in said liquors.
