A single mode oritical fiber comprising core having a refractive index of n1, a cladding surrounding said core and having a refractive index of n2 and an intermediate layer interposed between said core and cladding and having a refractive index of n3, wherein said refractive indices n1, n2 and n3 and selected to satify the following relations.
- 0.5<.DELTA.1<1.5
- -0.3>.DELTA.2>-1.0
