Abstract
Poly-.beta.-hydroxybutyrates obtained by biosynthesis are hydrolyzed in a reaction mixture containing poly-.beta.-hydroxybutyrates, water and an acid catalyst, in a solvent.

Process for the manufacture of .beta.-hydroxybutyric acid or its oligocondensates from its polycondensates, comprising subjecting the polycondensates to hydrolysis in a liquid reaction mixture containing a solvent, the polycondensates , an acid catalyst and water.
Process according to any one of claima 1 to 3, wherein a peroxide compound is added to the reaction mixture.
