Abstract
Polymers useful in compositions and methods for preventing the attachment of dental plaque to the surface of the teeth of mammals comprise alkali metal salts of certain carboxylated naphthalene formaldehyde polymers in a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle and the periodic application thereof to teeth.
Claims4
An oral hygiene composition comprising an effective amount for preventing deposition of dental plaque on teeth of a condensation polymer of formaldehyde with a naphthalene compound selected from the group consisting of 1-napthoic acid, 2-naphthoic acid, 1-naphthylacetic acid and 2-naphthylacetic acid, said polymer having repeating units of structure (A), ##STR2## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of --COOM and --CH.sub.2 COOM, n is such that the molecular weight of said polymer is from about 500 to about 10,000, and M is selected from the group consisting of lithium, sodium, and potassium, in a pharmaceutically acceptable oral hygiene vehicle compatible with said polymer.
