Abstract
A process for preparing halomethyl esters of penicillanic acid sulfone, intermediates to beta-lactamase inhibitors, from the corresponding substituted thiomethyl and sulfinylmethyl esters and a halogenating agent. The thiomethyl and sulfinylmethyl esters of penicillanic acid sulfone are useful intermediates.

A compound selected from those of the formula ##STR46## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and methyl, n is an integer of 0 or 1, and R.sub.1 is selected from the group consisting of alkyl having from one to six carbon atoms, cycloalkyl having from three to eight carbon atoms, benzyl and phenyl.
