Abstract
Novel tris-azo dyes and a liquid crystal composition containing the tris-azo dyes. The tris-azo dyes are of the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are various aromatic groups including aromatic amines, substituted aromatic amines, hydroxy-substituted aromatic groups and substituted hydroxy-containing aromatic groups. When the tris-azo dichroic dyes are used as a guest dye in a host liquid crystal material, they form a novel liquid crystal composition for use in liquid crystal displays.
Claims8
A liquid crystal composition for use in a liquid crystal display, comprising host liquid crystal material and at least one guest dichroic dye having a maximum absorption greater than about 580 nm and having an order parameter of at least 0.70 as dissolved in said liquid material of the general formula, ##STR47## where R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are selected from aromatic amine groups of the formula ##STR48## R.sub.7 is selected from the class consisting of hydrogen, C.sub.(1-6) alkyl, aryl, arylalkyl and alkyl amine, R.sub.8 is selected from the class consisting of hydrogen, C.sub.(1-6) alkyl, alkyl amine, alkoxy and halogen, and R.sub.9 and R.sub.10 are selected from the class consisting of hydrogen, C.sub.(1-3) alkyl, alkoxy and halogen.
