Abstract
Amides having the formula RCONR.sub.2 R.sub.3 in which R is .alpha.-halo-C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl; R.sub.2 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, and R.sub.3 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, are prepared by reacting an ester with an amine in the presence of a promotor which is a halide of a Group IIIa metal having a molecular weight of 26 or greater, or of a Group IVb metal. The process is particularly suitable for production of a desired optical isomer of such an amide.
Claims13
A process for the production of an optical isomer of an amide having the formula
- RCONR.sub.2 R.sub.3
- in which R is .alpha.-halo-C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 -alkyl;
- and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are the same or different C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, comprising reacting an ester having the formula
- RCOOR.sub.1
- in which R.sub.1 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, with an amine having the formula
- R.sub.2 R.sub.3 NH
- in the presence of from about 50 to about 300 mole %, based on the ester, of a promoter comprising a halide of a Group IIIa metal having an atomic weight of 26 or greater, or of a Group IVb metal.
