Abstract
A composition for cleaning fouled reverse osmosis membranes or other similar fouled surfaces. The composition will remove calcium and magnesium scale as well as iron scale and organic fouling materials. The composition is biodegradable and safe to use.

A composition for cleaning solid surfaces which are fouled with inorganic scale, comprising a member of the group consisting of monobasic sodium phosphate and monobasic potassium phosphate, a member of the group consisting of dibasic sodium phosphate and dibasic potassium phosphate, an effective amount of at least one member of the group consisting of citric acid and malic acid, and an effective amount of non-foaming nonionic detergent.
