Abstract
This invention relates to the extraction of oil shales and tar sands using an amide to effect extraction of kerogen and bitumenous materials from the shale or sand. Extraction may be at ambient conditions, if desired.

In a process for extracting organic materials from oil shale or tar sand by contacting the same with an organic extractant, the improvement wherein said organic extractant is an aliphatic amide comprisng the moiety ##STR2##
