Abstract
Molybdenum compositions suitable for improving the properties of lubricants and fuels comprise the reaction product of molybdenum and a polyamine Mannich reaction product, a polyamine hydrocarbyl-substituted dicarboxylic acid compound reaction product, and the oxidized and/or sulfurized reaction products thereof.
Claims23
A hydrocarbon-soluble and molybdenum-containing composition which comprises the reaction product of:
- (a) a hydrocarbon-soluble polyamine derivative selected from the group consisting of Mannich products and dicarboxylic acid-polyamine reaction products;
- (b) a molybdenum compound, wherein the amount of said molybdenum compound is from about 0.5 to 10 moles per mole of polyamine in the polyamine derivative;
- (c) a sulfur or sulfur-yielding compound wherein the amount of said sulfur or sulfur-yielding compound is from about 0.1 to 20 moles per mole of polyamine derivative;
- and
- (d) an oxidizing agent.
A process for preparing a molybdenum-containing composition which comprises:
- (a) reacting a hydrocarbon-soluble polyamine derivative selected from the group consisting of Mannich products and dicarboxylic acid-polyamine reaction products with sulfur or a sulfur-yielding compound at a temperature from about 50.degree. to 500.degree. C., wherein the amount of said sulfur or sulfur-yielding compound is from about 0.1 to 20 moles per mole of polyamine derivative;
- (b) oxidizing the product of (a) at a temperature from about -40.degree. to 427.degree. C.;
- and
- (c) reacting the product of (b) with a molybdenum compound at a temperature from about 50.degree. to 300.degree. C. to form a hydrocarbon-soluble product, wherein the amount of said molybdenum compound is from about 0.5 to 10 moles per mole of polyamine in the polyamine derivative.

- (b) reacting the product of (a) with sulfur or a sulfur-yielding compound at a temperature from about 50.degree. to 500.degree. C., wherein the amount of sulfur or sulfur-yielding compound is from about 0.1 to 20 moles per mole of polyamine derivative;
- and
- (c) reacting the product of (b) with a molybdenum compound at a temperature from about 50.degree. to 300.degree. C. to form a hydrocarbon-soluble product, wherein the amount of said molybdenum compound is from about 0.5 to 10 moles per mole of polyamine in the polyamine derivative.
