Abstract
Laser engraving system suitable for use in the production of artwork for printed circuit boards. The system includes a massive base table to reduce vibration and thermally induced variations, and modulation of the writing beam is controlled by a reference signal generated by a non-linear reticle scanned concurrently with the writing beam to compensate for spherical aberration in the optical system. Modulation of the writing beam is further synchronized in accordance with the position of the carriage which holds the output medium on which an image is formed by the writing beam.
Claims6
In a system for forming an image of printed circuit artwork on an output medium:
- a massive base table comprising a stone slab having a highly polished upper surface, a carriage assembly for holding the output medium, means mounting the carriage assembly on the surface of the base table for movement in a first direction along said surface, a laser mounted on the base table for generating a writing beam, means for modulating the writing beam in accordance with the artwork to be imaged on the output medium, an optical table comprising a second stone slab rigidly mounted on the base table, optical means mounted on the optical table for directing the writing beam along a predetermined path toward the output medium, a scanning table comprising a third stone slab rigidly mounted on the base table, and scanning means mounted on the scanning table in the path of the beam for deflecting said beam across the output medium in a direction perpendicular to the first direction.
In a system for forming an image on an output medium, means for providing a writing beam and a reference beam of different wavelengths, optical means for deflecting the writing and reference beams simultaneously to effect scanning of the output medium by the writing beam, means including a reference mask positioned to receive the reference beam from the optical means for providing a reference signal corresponding to the position of the writing beam, said reference mask comprising a non-linear reticle having a plurality of beam transmissive areas spaced progressively farther apart to offset the effects of chromatic aberration introduced by the optical means, and means controlled by the reference signal for modulating the writing beam according to the image to be formed.
In a system for use in the manufacture of printed circuit boards:
- means for providing a beam of coherent radiation, means for modulating the beam with data representative of artwork to be formed on the circuit boards, a carriage movable along an axis for supporting an output medium, means for driving the carriage along the axis, means for monitoring the position of the carriage and providing a signal when the carriage is in a predetermined position, means for deflecting the beam to effect scanning of the output medium along successive scan lines perpendicular to the axis of carriage movement, means for providing an indexing signal at the start of each scan line, and means responsive to the carriage position signal and the indexing signal for synchronizing the modulation of the beam with the start of a scan line when the carriage is in the predetermined position.
