Abstract
A metallic cylindrical mandrel is covered with short cylindrical fiber shells and is used for high temperature applications. The shells are fabricated of aluminum silicate fibers with a binder and are independent of each other to permit relative movement between the shells and the cylinder due to thermal expansion and bending.
Claims6
A high temperature roller comprising an elongated cylindrical metal mandrel, a series of relatively short monolithic shell sub-assemblies each mounted on said mandrel, each sub-assembly being fabricated of fibers taken from the group comprising aluminum silicate, glass, or mineral wool and a binder, structural spacers inserted between adjacent monolithic sub-assemblies and separating said sub-assemblies whereby transverse bending of said mandrel will be accommodated by relative angular shifting of said sub-assemblies, and means holding said sub-assemblies on said mandrel while accommodating differences in thermal expansion.
