A novel stator assembly, D.C. electric motor, and method of controlling the speed of the motor is described. The stator assembly includes a pair of field poles, each having a field coil wound around a shank portion, and a plurality of separately excitable field control coils wound individually around the field pole legs defining a face portion of the field poles. The field poles also have a core portion which provides a magnetic path between the shank and face portion. This core portion permits the magnetic flux in the field poles to shift across the face portion when one or more of the field control coils are energized magnetically subtractive to the flux generated by the field coils. The speed of the motor may be controlled by energizing the field control coils and controlling their polarity with respect to the field coils. A motor controller for the motor according to the present invention is also described, and is particularly useful in an electric vehicle application.
A stator assembly for a D.C. electric motor, comprising:
The stator assembly according to claims 2 or 4, wherein said field pole leg members define slots for receiving said field control coils.
An improved D.C. electric motor of the type having an armature, a commutator, a yoke member, and a brush assembly, wherein the improvement comprises:
A method of controlling the speed of a D.C. electric motor having a yoke, an armature, a pair of opposing field poles, each of said field poles including a shank portion mounted to said yoke, a face portion defined by a plurality of field pole legs extending radially inwardly to form a bore for receiving said armature, and a core portion for providing a magnetic path between said shank portion and said face portion, a field coil wound around said shank portion of each of said field poles, and a plurality of separately excitable field control coils wound individually around said field pole legs of each of said field poles, comprising the steps of:
A method of variably controlling the speed of a D.C. electric motor having a yoke, an armature, a pair of opposing field poles, each of said field poles including a shank portion mounted to said yoke, a face portion defined by a plurality of field pole legs extending radially inwardly to form a bore for receiving said armature, and a core portion for providing a magnetic path between said shank portion and said face portion, a field coil wound around said shank portion of each of said field poles, and a plurality of separately excitable field control coils wound individually around said field pole legs of each of said field poles, coprising the steps of:
