Abstract
An optical waveguide having a cladding of high purity glass and a core of high purity glass doped with an amount of P.sub.2 O.sub.5 and GeO.sub.2 to increase the refractive index thereof to a predetermined level. The ratio of P.sub.2 O.sub.5 to GeO.sub.2 is such that the softening point temperature of the core is compatible with that of the cladding. The core glass has a cation impurity level not exceeding 10 parts per million.
Claims18
An optical fiber comprising
- a cladding layer formed of high purity glass, and
- a core of high purity glass containing an amount of P.sub.2 O.sub.5 and GeO.sub.2 to provide a refractive index greater than that of said cladding layer, said core glass having a cation impurity level not exceeding 10 parts per million of transition elements.
An optical waveguide comprising a core of glass formed of phosphorous pentoxide, germania and silica and a cladding of a glass of a lower refractive index than the core.
An optical waveguide fiber comprising a glass core surrounded by a cladding of glass having a refractive index less than that of said core glass, said core glass comprising SiO.sub.2 and GeO.sub.2, said core glass including P.sub.2 O.sub.5 in an amount sufficient that the softening point temperature of said core glass is less than that of said cladding glass.
