Abstract
The invention is a catalytic process for splitting water to provide hydrogen by irradiating an aqueous solution with actinic light. The solution contains a catalyst comprising a complex compound of a metal of the Group Ib, IIb, IVb, Vb, VIb, VIIb and VIIIb of the periodic system or magnesium, having ligands linked to the metal atom via two sulfur atoms or via one sulfur atom and one nitrogen atom.
Claims14
Process for the catalytic splitting of water to provide hydrogen, comprising irradiating with actinic light an aqueous solution containing a catalyst comprising a complex compound of a metal of the group I.sub.b, II.sub.b, IV.sub.b, V.sub.b, VI.sub.b, VII.sub.b and VIII of the periodic system or magnesium, having ligands linked to the metal atom via two sulfur atoms or via one sulfur atom and one nitrogen atom, thereby to split the water and form hydrogen.
