Abstract
Novel compounds are prepared by reacting ornithine or arginine with alpha ketao analogs of branched chain essential amino acids, namely valine, leucine and isoleucine. The compounds are useful either individually or as a mixture in the treatment of hepatic disorders which are characterized by hyperammonemia and portal systemic encephalopathy. Use of these compounds in treatment of renal failure also appears promising.
Claims13
A composition for promoting protein synthesis by improving nitrogen balance in subjects with liver disease comprising a carrier and an effective amount of at least one compound having the formula:
- AK.xH.sub.2 O
- wherein A is selected from the group consisting of arginine and ornithine, K is an alpha keto analog of a branched chain essential amino acid, and x varies from zero to about one.
A method for promoting protein synthesis by improving nitrogen balance in subjects with liver disease which method comprises oral or parenteral administration in effective dosages to subjects suffering from this condition of a composition comprising a mixture of arginine and/or ornithine salts of alpha keto analogs of branched chain essential amino acids.
A method for promoting protein synthesis by improving nitrogen balance in subjects with liver disease comprising oral or parenteral administration in effective dosages to subjects suffering from this condition of at least one compound having the formula:
