Abstract
The present invention discloses tricyclic compounds having a gem-bis(hydroxymethyl) functional group. Compounds within the formulae of the present invention include those components having unsaturation in the ring structure and those in which the unsaturation has been converted a halogen or phosphite functionality.

The present invention claims as a new composition of matter an 8,8(9,9)-bis(hydroxymethyl) tricyclo compound as shown below:
- ##STR4## and mixtures thereof.
8,8(9,9)-bis(hydroxymethyl)-tricyclo[5,2,1,0.sup.2,6 ] dec-3-ene.
8,8(9,9)-bis(hydroxymethyl)-tricyclo[5,2,1,0.sup.2,6 ] decane.
8(9)-hydroxymethyl-8(9)-formyl-tricyclo[5,2,1,0.sup.2,6 ] dec-3-ene.
