Synthesis of hydroxy functional melamine derivatives

In a process for preparing hydroxy terminated melamine derivatives by reacting an alkanolamine with an amino-s-triazine compound of the formula ##STR6## wherein each R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl (C.sub.1 C.sub.20), cycloalkyl (C.sub.5 -C.sub.8), aryl (C.sub.6 -C.sub.12), NH.sub.2 and NHR' wherein R' is alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.20), cycloalkyl (C.sub.5 -C.sub.8) or aryl (C.sub.6 -C.sub.12) and at least one R is NH.sub.2, the improvement comprising reducing the formation of isomelamine impurities by using an alkanolamine of the formula ##STR7## wherein R" is hydrogen, alkyl (C.sub.1 -C.sub.20) or phenyl.
