Abstract
A method for preparing macroporous aminotriazine-aldehyde resins by reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst and a miscible porogen. The resin product has high surface area and porosity and displays excellent sorption capacity.
Claims18
A process for the production of highly adsorbent macroporous resin having a surface area greater than 100 square meters per gram, which comprises reacting a polyaminotriazine and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of about 1:2 to about 1:7 in an aqueous medium in the presence of an acid catalyst and at least one miscible organic porogen, heating until gelation occurs, then curing the resulting resin, removing the porogen while keeping the volume of the gelled resin constant, and crushing the cured resin to form a particulate product.
A process for the production of highly adsorbent macroporous resin, which comprises reacting melamine and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 1:3 to 1:5 in aqueous solution, in the presence of a formic acid catalyst and n-propanol porogen, wherein the reaction mixture is heated to a temperature of 75.degree. to 85.degree. prior to gelation, followed by curing of the product for a period of at least 2 hours, crushing the cured material to form a particulate product, and removal of the porogen without substantial effect on the volume of the gelled product, to produce a resin having a porosity greater than about 0.2 ml per gram and a surface area greater than 100 square meters per gram.
