Abstract
3-Aryl-3-indolylphthalides, 3-aryl-3-pyrrolylphthalides and 3-aryl-3-carbazolylphthalides prepared by interaction of the appropriate 2-(heteroaryl)carbonylbenzoic acid and the appropriate phenylamine, and 3,3-bis(indolyl)-phthalides prepared by the interaction of the appropriate 2-(indolyl)carbonylbenzoic acid and the appropriate indole are useful as color formers in pressure-sensitive carbonless duplicating systems, thermal marking systems and hectographic copying systems.
Claims1
A 3-[2-R.sup.4 -4-N(R).sub.2 -phenyl]-3-(9-R.sup.8 -3-carbazolyl)-4-R.sup.o -5-R.sup.1 -6-R.sup.2 -7-R.sup.3 -phthalide of the formula ##STR35## wherein:
- R.sup.o, R.sup.3 and one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent hydrogen and the other of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 represent ##STR36## in which B represents ##STR37## wherein Y is hydrogen, an alkali metal cation, an ammonium cation, a C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 mono-, di- or trialkylammonium cation, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 alkyl, C.sub.2 to C.sub.18 alkenyl, benzyl or benzyl substituted in the benzene ring thereof by C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 alkyl, halo or C.sub.1 to C.sub.8 alkoxy,
- Y' is hydrogen or C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 alkyl, and
- Y" is hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.18 alkyl or C.sub.4 to C.sub.12 N,N-dimethylamino;
- R represents non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, benzyl or benzyl substituted in the benzene ring by one or two of halo or C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alkyl;
- R.sup.4 represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alkyl, C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkoxy, acetamido, dialkylamino in which alkyl is non-tertiary C.sub.1 to C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.2 to C.sub.5 acyloxy, or halo;
- and
- R.sup.8 represents hydrogen, C.sub.1 to C.sub.3 alkyl or phenyl.
