Abstract
Solution qualities of carboxymethyl cellulose are improved by preparing the same with cellulose which has been alkalized in the presence of a borate ion-containing salt.

In the process of preparing carboxymethyl cellulose wherein cellulose is stepped in an alkali metal hydroxide to prepare alkali cellulose and thereafter reacted with sodium monochloroacetate to convert said alkali cellulose to carboxymethyl cellulose, the improvement which comprises carrying out the alkali cellulose preparation in the presence of about 1.5 to 20% by weight, based on the weight of cellulose, of a borate ion-containing salt.
