A process for the preparation of vinblastine, which comprises hydroxylating .DELTA..sup.20' dehydroxy-20' vincaleucoblastine according to formula (II):
- ##STR5## in a solvent in the presence of a metallic salt selected from the group consisting of acetate and trifluoroacetate of Tl.sup.+3, Hg.sup.++ and Pb.sup.+4, and reducing the compound which is obtained.
