Abstract
Disclosed herein are a process and apparatus for manufacturing vanadium pentoxide in powder form by the thermal decomposition of ammonium metavanadate containing more than 10% NH.sub.3 in a single operation.
Claims18
In an apparatus for the manufacture of vanadium pentoxide which comprises a hollow enclosure rotatable about its longitudinal axis, means for rotating said enclosure about said axis, means for heating said enclosure, a plurality of rotatable mixing blades in the interior of said enclosure, improved means for controlling the internal pressure within said enclosure comprising:
- a vacuum pipe coaxially mounted to extend within said enclosure,
- means connected to said pipe for withdrawing gas from within said enclosure,
- an air inlet port in said enclosure, and
- means mounting said vacuum pipe to said enclosure for axial movement with respect thereto, so that the projection of said vacuum pipe into said enclosure is axially adjustable.
Apparatus for the manufacture of vanadium pentoxide in dry powder form which comprises a hollow enclosure rotatable about its longitudinal axis.
- means for rotating said enclosure about said longitudinal axis,
- means for loading a first chemical product at one end of said enclosure,
- means for conducting said chemical product through said enclosure,
- means for withdrawing gases evolved upon heating said chemical product from said enclosure and located therein, said means extending longitudinally from one end of said enclosure toward said loading end,
- means for admitting air into said enclosure near said one end, and
- means for heating a plurality of predetermined portions of said enclosure in open communication with one another to respectively different predetermined temperatures.
In an apparatus for the manufacture of vanadium pentoxide which comprises a hollow enclosure having an inlet end for reactants and outlet end for vanadium pentoxide, said enclosure being rotatable about its longitudinal axis, and means for heating said enclosure, the improvement comprising:
- a vacuum pipe mounted to extend within said enclosure from said outlet end toward said inlet end;
- means connected to said pipe for withdrawing gas from within said enclosure;
- an air inlet port in said enclosure disposed near the outlet thereof.
Apparatus for the manufacture of vanadium pentoxide which comprises:
- a hollow enclosure rotatable about its longitudinal axis, said enclosure having an inlet end for reactants and an outlet end for vanadium pentoxide,
- means for rotating said enclosure about said longitudinal axis,
- a heating sleeve spaced apart from and substantially surrounding said enclosure, said sleeve being subdivided into three separate heating areas, each of said areas positioned to produce indirect heat to a predetermined portion of said enclosure and associated with a separate heat source,
- a plurality of rotatable mixing blades fixed to the interior of said enclosure,
- a vacuum pipe coaxially mounted to extend within said enclosure from said outlet,
- a vacuum pump connected to said vacuum pipe for withdrawing gas from said enclosure,
- means for admitting air into said enclosure near the outlet end thereof,
- means for maintaining each of said heating zones at a separate temperature,
- means for loading a moist chemical composition into one end of said enclosure;
- and
- a static pipe coaxially mounted about said vacuum pipe and operating in conjunction with said air inlet for admitting air into the lumen of said enclosure.
Apparatus for the manufacture of vanadium pentoxide which comprises:
- a hollow enclosure rotatable about its longitudinal axis, said enclosure having an inlet end for reactants and an outlet end for vanadium pentoxide,
- means for rotating said enclosure about said longitudinal axis,
- a heating sleeve spaced apart from and substantially surrounding said enclosure, said sleeve being subdivided into three separate heating areas, each of said areas positioned to produce indirect heat to a predetermined portion of said enclosure and associated with a separate heat source,
- a plurality of rotatable mixing blades fixed to the interior of said enclosure,
- a vacuum pipe coaxially mounted to extend within said enclosure from said outlet,
- a vacuum pump connected to said vacuum pipe for withdrawing gas from said enclosure,
- means for admitting air into said enclosure near the outlet end thereof,
- means for maintaining each of said heating zones at a separate temperature,
- means for loading a moist chemical composition into one end of said enclosure and
- said vacuum pipe extending from said outlet end towards said inlet end.
