Abstract
Improved reinforced devices, which can be retained in the vagina during intercourse, deliver spermicidal surfactants and provide contraceptive benefits. Lobed devices provide channels through which menses and other biological fluids can pass. Multi-compartment devices provide added protection against leakage, rupture or perforation during manufacture, handling and use.
Claims20
A contraceptive device especially adapted for use within the vaginal cavity, comprising:
- a circumferentially lobed dish-shaped container, said container being formed from:
- a dish-shaped, scalloped back, said back being characterized by one or more thickened, reinforced areas, and a circumferentially lobed front face capping said back, at least a portion of said front face being a non-porous semi-permeable membrane transport surface;
- said container being substantially filled with an aqueous solution of a micelle-forming spermicidal surfactant compound at a concentration greater than or equal to the critical micelle concentration of said surfactant compound.
A contraceptive device especially adapted for use within the vaginal cavity, comprising a dish-shaped or disc-shaped container, said container being characterized by one or more internal reinforcing walls, said container being partitioned by said reinforcing walls into a plurality of compartments, said compartments containing an aqueous solution of a micelle-forming surfactant compound at a concentration greater than or equal to the critical micelle concentration of said surfactant compound, a portion of an external surface of said container being a non-porous, semi-permeable membrane transport surface.
