Abstract
2-(1,4-Benzodioxan-2-ylalkyl)imidazoles having the general formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1, and R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, and alkyl, and wherein n is an integer equal to 0, 1 or 2, and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof, are useful as antidepressants.
Claims16
A compound of the formula ##STR6## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl, and wherein n is either 0, 1, or 2, and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof.
A composition for treating depression in humans comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable non-toxic excipient and a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of the formula ##STR7## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl, and wherein n is either 0, 1, or 2, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
A method of treating depression in humans which comprises administering to a subject in need of such treatment, a therapeutically effective amount of a compound of the formula:
- ##STR8## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl, and wherein n is either 0, 1, or 2, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, or a pharmaceutical composition containing an effective amount of said compound or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
A process for the production of a compound of the formula:
- ##STR9## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and lower alkyl, and wherein n is either 0, 1, or 2, and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts thereof which comprises one or more of the following steps
- (a) converting an imidate of the general formula ##STR10## wherein R is alkyl and n is 0, 1 or 2 to the corresponding compound of formula I by treatment with a compound of the formula ##STR11## wherein R, R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are as herein defined, followed by treatment with acid;
- and optionally
- (b) converting the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt to the free base;
- or
- (c) converting the free base to the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt;
- or
- (d) converting a salt of the subject compound to another salt by a salt interchange.
