A process for preparing propylene oxide which comprises contacting propylene in a reaction zone with a thallic salt consisting essentially of a thallic alkanoate derived from an alkanoic acid containing from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, in the presence of an acidic aqueous reaction medium consisting essentially of water, said thallic alkanoate and at least one alkanoic monocarboxylic acid which possesses at least seven carbon atoms per molecule and which is selected from the group consisting of (a) acids of the formula (I):
- ##STR2## wherein R.sup.1, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are the same or different and are selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, alkyl, aryl, cycloalkyl, alkaryl, aralkyl, and derivatives of the foregoing groups in which a non-carbonyl carbon is replaced by oxygen, and (b) halogenated derivatives of the above acids, with the proviso that when R.sup.1 is aryl or alkaryl, R.sup.2 and R.sup.3 are not both hydrogen.
The improved process of 1 wherein the liquid reaction medium has a pH of from about 1.5 to less than about 7.
