Abstract

Disclosed is a process for the total synthesis of thienamycin from L-aspartic acid via intermediate III: ##STR1## R=H, blocking group or salt cation.

##STR31## wherein R.sup.1 is a protecting group selected from t-butyl-dimethylsilyl, t-butyldiphenylsilyl, triphenylsilyl, isopropyldimethylsilyl, and 3,4-dimethoxybenzyl.
