Abstract
The addition of a small amount of a phenol to an ethylene-vinyl alcohol oxygen-barrier layer significantly improves oxygen impermeability under high humidity conditions.
Claims12
In a multi-layer polymer structure having an ethylene-vinyl alcohol gas-barrier layer, the improvement which comprises the forming of the gas-barrier layer from ethylene-vinyl alcohol to which has been added an orthosubstituted phenol having a melting point below about 185.degree. C. and a boiling point above about 125.degree. C.
A multi-layer packaging film structure comprising at least one structural polymer layer and a gas-barrier layer, the gas-barrier layer consisting essentially of ethylene-vinyl alcohol polymer to which has been added an ortho-substituted phenol having a melting point below about 185.degree. C. and a boiling point above about 125.degree. C.
A multi-layer packaging film structure comprising an outer structural polymer layer of nylon or a polyolefin with a modified polyolefin adhesive layer, a gas-barrier layer consisting essentially of ethylenevinyl alcohol polymer to which has been added an orthosubstituted phenol having a melting point below about 185.degree. C. and a boiling point above about 125.degree. C., an adhesive layer of a modified polyolefin, an inner structural layer of a polyolefin, and an inside heat-sealable layer.
In a multi-layer polymer structure having an ethylene-vinyl alcohol polymer gas-barrier layer, the improvement which comprises the forming in the gas-barrier layer from ethylene-vinyl alcohol to which has been added an ultraviolet, light-absorbing orthosubstituted phenol having a melting point below about 185.degree. C. and a boiling point above about 125.degree. C.
