Abstract
2-Chloro-5-trifluoromethylpyridine or a 2-chloro-5-perchlorofluoromethylpyridine is prepared by chlorination of 3-trifluoromethylpyridine or a 3-perchlorofluoromethylpyridine respectively in the vapor phase at a temperature in the range from 100.degree. C. to 500.degree. C.
Claims5
A process for the selective preparation of 2-chloro-5-trifluoromethylpyridine or a 2-chloro-5-perchlorofluoromethylpyridine which comprises vaporizing 3-trifluoromethylpyridine or perchlorofluoromethylpyridine respectively and chlorinating the vaporized 3-trifluoromethylpyridine or perchlorofluoromethylpyridine by contacting the same in the vapor phase with gaseous chlorine in the range of 300.degree. C. to 450.degree. C., condensing the resulting reaction mixture and recovering the desired product from the condensate.
