Abstract
Disclosed is a process for the preparation of an overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate in which the overbasing is carried out in the presence of a solution of sugar.

In a process for the preparation of an overbased alkaline earth metal sulfonate in which a mixture of a hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid or neutral sulfonate in an organic solvent comprising a mineral oil, is overbased with an akaline earth metal base, the improvement comprising carrying out said overbasing in the presence of a solution of a sugar.
