A method of treating waste solutions which are produced during the production of fuel and breeder material for nuclear reactors and which contain about 60 weight percent ammonium nitrate which method comprises the steps of:
- continuously spraying waste solution containing about 60% ammonium nitrate into an ammonium nitrate decomposition furnace for essential decomposition;
- and
- subjecting the decomposition products formed during said spraying step to condensation to enable separation of said decompositions products into a liquid and a gaseous phase;
- and
- supplying a quantity of oxygen, equivalent to the NO content of the decomposition products, to the ammonium nitrate decomposition zone.
