Abstract
Herbicidal diphenyl ether compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is an alkyl group optionally substituted by halogen or phenyl; R.sup.2 is hydrogen, halogen or nitro; R.sup.3 is hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, trifluoromethyl or cyano; R.sup.4 is hydrogen, halogen, or trifluoromethyl; R.sup.5 is halogen or trifluoromethyl; and R.sup.6 is hydrogen, or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl. These compounds are useful as selective herbicides in a range of crops, for example, cotton, soya bean, peas, maize, wheat and rice.

Herbicidal diphenyl ether compounds of the formula (I) ##STR11## and salts thereof, wherein R.sup.1 is an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms optionally substituted by one or more fluorine atoms, or by a phenyl group optionally substituted by one or more halogen atoms;
- R.sup.2 is a hydrogen atom, a fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine atom, or a nitro group;
- R.sup.3 is a hydrogen atom, a fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine atom, an alkyl group of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, a trifluoromethyl group, or a cyano group;
- R.sup.4 is a hydrogen atom, a fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine atom, or a trifluoromethyl group;
- R.sup.5 is a fluorine, chlorine, bromine, or iodine atom or a trifluoromethyl group;
- and R.sup.6 is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl group of 1 to 4 carbon atoms.
