Abstract
The novel .alpha.-phenoxy-propionic acid-.gamma.-butyrolactone esters and thioesters of the formula ##STR1## wherein X is oxygen or sulfur, and Z is the 4-trifluoromethylphenyl group or the 3,5-dichloropyridyl-2-oxy group, have a herbicidal action. They are particularly suitable for selectively controlling gramineous weeds in cultivated crops.

An .alpha.-phenoxy-propionic acid-.gamma.-butyrolactone ester or thioester of the formula I ##STR9## wherein X is oxygen or sulfur,
- Z is the 4-trifluoromethylphenyl group.
