Abstract
Esters of an acid of formula: ##STR1## which is termed "monic acid" have activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms.
Claims10
A pharmaceutical composition for treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula (II):
- ##STR30## wherein R is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkenyl of 2 to 8 carbon atoms or alkynyl of 2 to 8 carbon atoms substituted by cycloalkyl of 3 to 7 carbon atoms unsubstituted or substituted by alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or aryl unsubstituted or substittued by up to 5 substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, hydroxy, amino, carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, in the alkoxy moiety and alkoxycarbonyalkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkoxy moiety and 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety, in combination with a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
A method of treating bacterial infections in humans and animals which comprises administering to a human or animal in need of said treatment an antibacterially effective amount of a compound of the formula (II). ##STR32## wherein R is alkyl of 1 to 20 carbon atoms, alkenyl of 2to 8 carbon atoms or alkynyl of 2 to 8 carbon atoms substituted by cycloalkyl of 3 to 7 carbon atoms unsubstituted or substituted by alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms or aryl unsubstituted or substituted by up to 5 substituents selected from the group consisting of halogen, alkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, alkoxy of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, hydroxy, amino, carboxy, alkoxycarbonyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms, in the alkoxy moiety and alkoxycarbonyalkyl of 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkoxy moiety and 1 to 6 carbon atoms in the alkyl moiety.
