Abstract
A heart pumpconsisting of a housing having an inlet and an outlet and a diaphragm adapted to be reciprocated to cause flow of flood through the inlet and the outlet, a brushless dc motor mounted on the housing, the motor having a fixed ball screw nut and a ball screw mounted for axial movement with respect to the motor rotor while being fixed against rotation with respect to the rotor whereby rotation of the rotor causes the screw to move axially with respect to the motor thereby actuating the pump diaphragm.

In a heart pump having a housing, inlet and outlet passageways in said housing, a diaphragm means for reciprocating said diaphragm comprising:
- a brushless dc motor mounted on said housing, said motor including a fixed stator and a rotor rotatably mounted in said stator,
- a ball screw nut fixed to said stator,
- a ball screw engageable with said diaphragm and threadedly connected by anti-friction balls to said nut,
- said screw being axially slidable and fixed against rotation with respect to said rotor,
- and means for periodically reversing said motor to cause said screw to reciprocate.
