Abstract

A programmable logic controller includes a plurality of input interfaces and a plurality of output interfaces for connection to industrial equipment such as automatic assembly equipment, textile machinery, materials handling equipment, and chemical processes. The input and output circuits can be randomly addressed as to their state through an eight bit bus, which connects in parallel with up to 16 groups of eight input and/output circuits. The controller includes groups of timers which are each manually adjustable as to the timing operation and which are sequentially addressed each time a timing function is called for by the program. The timers are designed to be cascaded in groups to virtually any number of timers. The controller includes a scratch pad memory, half of which retains memory upon power failure and half of which does not. The control of the controller by the operator is made more nearly foolproof by interlocking the operations of control switches. Three programming instructions are available which are conditional upon the data in the accumulator of the controller.

Dependent claims

An output interface card suitable for electrically isolating at least four outputs of an electronic device from at least four corresponding loads controlled by the electronic device comprising:

(a) four card data inputs suitable for connection to the four outputs, respectively, of the electronic device;
(b) four card data outputs suitable for connection to the four corresponding loads, respectively;
(c) four output interface circuits each of which includes a corresponding one of said card data inputs and card data outputs, and each of which contains:
(1) an isolator capable of handling a load of at least 2 amperes at 110 volts, said isolator having its output coupled to the corresponding card data output,
(2) a latch producing and retaining at its output the signal appearing at its input when enabled through a latch enable input, said latch having its input connected to the corresponding card data input and having its output connected to the input of said isolator, and
(3) a gate for producing at its output the signal present at its input only when enabled through a gate enable input, said gate having its input connected to the output of said latch and having its output connected to the input of said latch;
(d) means connecting in parallel all of said latch enable inputs of said four output interface circuits;
and
(e) means connecting in parallel all of said gate enable inputs of said four output interface circuits.
