Abstract
A method for implanting an electrode adjacent the heart of a patient without requiring major surgery. A skin incision is made in the anterior thoracic region and/or in the abdominal wall, and by means of a specialized implantation tool tunnels are created through which the electrodes may be inserted and placed in contact with the heart. The implantation tool cooperates with the electrode such that after placement of the electrode the tool may be withdrawn from the patient with the electrode remaining in place.
Claims10
A method of implanting a cardioverting electrode proximate to the human heart,
- making a skin incision in the upper abdominal wall,
- separating tissue planes by means of a hand-held instrument,
- creating a tunnel inside the thorax and outside the pleural cavity, through the soft tissues surrounding the heart, said tunnel originating at the skin incision and terminating at the heart,
- inserting at least one electrode into said skin incision,
- progressively advancing said at least one electrode through said tunnel in the direction of the heart, and
- locating said electrode proximate the exterior surface of the heart.
A method of implanting a cardioverting electrode proximate to the human heart,
- makng a skin incision in the upper abdominal wall,
- creating a tunnel inside the thorax and outside the pleural cavity, through the soft tissues surrounding the heart,
- locating said tunnel between the interior surface of the sternum and the anterior surface of the heart's pericardium,
- inserting at least one electrode into said tunnel, and locating said electrode proximate the heart surface.
A method for implanting cardioverting electrodes in a human, comprising the steps of:
- making an incision in the upper abdominal wall,
- providing a hand-held mandrel,
- mounting the electrode on said mandrel,
- inserting said mandrel with said electrode mounted thereon into said incision,
- advancing said mandrel with said electrode mounted thereon inside the thorax and outside the pleural cavity through the soft tissue close to the surface of the heart, said advancing step creating a tunnel which originates at the incision and terminates at the heart,
- positioning said electrode proximate the exterior surface of the heart, and
- withdrawing said mandrel from said human.
A method for implanting cardioverting electrodes in a human, comprising the steps of:
- making an incision in the upper abdominal wall,
- providing a hand-held mandrel,
- inserting said mandrel into said incision,
- advancing said mandrel in the direction of said heart to create a tunnel inside the thorax and outside the pleural cavity through the soft tissue close to the surface of the heart, said tunnel originating at the incision and terminating at the heart,
- withdrawing said mandrel from said human,
- mounting the electrode on said mandrel,
- inserting the mandrel with the electrode mounted thereon into said pre-formed tunnel,
- positioning said electrode proximate the surface of the heart, and
- withdrawing said mandrel from said human.
A method of implanting a cardioverting electrode proximate to the human heart,
- making a skin incision in the anterior thoracic wall,
- separating tissue planes by means of a hand-held instrument,
- creating a tunnel inside the thorax and outside the pleural cavity, through the soft tissues surrounding the heart, said tunnel originating at said skin incision and terminating at the heart,
- inserting at least one electrode into said skin incision,
- progressively advancing said at least one electrode through said tunnel in the direction of the heart, and
- locating said electrode proximate the exterior surface of the heart.
