A biologically pure culture comprising a new microorganism mutant identified as Streptomyces mediterranei M 18, ATCC 21789, and a nutrient medium consisting essentially of an assimilable carbon source, an assimilable nitrogen source and essential mineral salts, said culture being capable of producing rifamycin B in a recoverable quantity upon fermentation.
