New water-insoluble azo dyes

Azo dyes of general formula:

• ##STR94## wherein:
• D is selected from the group consisting of the residues of diazotizable components of the carbocyclic or heterocyclic series and said residues substituted by halogen, trifluoromethyl, CN, NO.sub.2, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, NHCO alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4, SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, SO.sub.2 alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4, SO.sub.2 NH alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4, SO.sub.2 N (alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4).sub.2, SO.sub.2 NH phenyl, hydroxyethoxy, chloroethoxy, methoxyethoxy, COO alkyl C.sub.1 -C.sub.4, COO cycloalkyl, phenyl, phenoxy, phenylazo or naphthylazo;
• X is selected from the group consisting of the ethylene group or an ethylene group substituted by halogen, methyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, aryl, aralkyl and CH.sub.2 OCO(HN).sub.n R in which R and n have the meanings defined below;
• R is selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkyl substituted by halogen, CN or COOH, C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 alkenyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.8 alkenyl substituted by halogen, CN or COOH, aryl, aryl substituted by one or more halogens, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.8 alkoxy, aryloxy, cycloalkoxy, aralkoxy, naphthyl, or naphthyl substituted by halogen, CN or COOH, or aralkyl;
• R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 which are the same or different, are C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl substituted by halogen or CN, or aralkyl;
• R.sup.3 is hydrogen, halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxyl or substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkoxyl;
• and
• n is zero or 1.
