Abstract
Stable pillared interlayered clays are prepared by reacting smectite clays with high molecular weight cationic metal complexes of metals such as aluminum and zirconium. The high molecular weight complexes are prepared by hydrolysis of copolymerization of a metal complex such as aluminum chlorohydrol. The pillared, interlayered clays possess a high degree of thermal and hydrothermal stability and may be used in the preparation of catalysts and sorbents.
Claims11
In a method for preparing a pillared interlayered smectite clay product wherein a smectite clay is reacted with a mixture of a polymeric cationic hydroxy metal complex and water to obtain a pillared, interlayered smectite having greater than 50 percent of its surface area in pores of less than 30 A.degree. in diameter after dehydration, the improvement comprising reacting said smectite with a high molecular weight cationic hydroxy metal complex and copolymers thereof having a molecular weight of from about 2000 to 20,000.
