A muffler construction, particularly for exhaust gases of air-operated tools, comprises, a tubular sleeve having a passage therethrough, an exhaust gas pipe connected into the sleeve and defining a restricted flow passage with the sleeve, first and second opposed cylindrical coaxial shell sections, each having a closed end wall at their respective outer ends and facing in opposite directions engaged with the exhaust gas pipe, and sidewalls spaced radially outwardly from the sleeve. The exhaust gas pipe has a gas pipe discharge and there are partition walls in the shell sections defining a first expansion chamber and at least one additional expansion chamber. A constricted flow passage is defined between the first expansion chamber and the at least one additional expansion chamber with sealing and enclosing members closing the sidewalls of the first and second shell sections so as to define the first expansion chamber and at least one additional expansion chamber within the shell sections. The exhaust gases from the discharge enter into the first expansion chamber and form a vortex therein with the gases then flowing into the restricted passage into the additional chamber wherein a second vortex is generated. A final gas discharge is defined in the wall of the second shell sections which communicates with the atmosphere.
A muffler construction, particularly for exhaust gases of air-operated tools, comprising, a tubular sleeve having a passage therethrough, exhaust gas pipe means extending into said sleeve and defining a constricted flow passage with said sleeve, a shell having first and second opposed cylindrical coaxial shell sections, each having an end wall at their respective outer ends and facing in opposite directions engaged with said exhaust gas pipe means, and side walls spaced radially outwardly from said sleeve, said exhaust gas pipe means having a gas pipe discharge, partition means in said shell section defining a first expansion chamber and at least one additional expansion chamber, said constricted flow passage extending between said first expansion chamber and said at least one additional expansion chamber, sealing and enclosing means closing said sidewalls of said first and second shell sections so as to define the first expansion chamber and at least one additional expansion chamber within said shell sections, the exhaust gases from said discharge entering into said first expansion chamber and forming a vortex therein with the gases then flowing into said constricted passage into said one additional expansion chamber to form an additional vortex, and a final gas discharge defined in said wall of said second shell section communicating with said additional expansion chamber.
A muffler device, having an external casing for discharging exhaust gases, such as, the exhaust gases of air-operated tools, having an external casing formed with at least one air exhaust port, said muffler comprising, in combination, at least two substantially cylindrical outer shell sections arranged in axially abutting coaxial relation with each other and adapted to be mounted in radially spaced coaxial surrounding relation with the external casing of an air-operated tool, the two terminal outer shell sections each having a radially inwardly extending annular end wall engageable with such external casing, whereby, the outer shell sections, when mounted on the external casing of an air-operated tool define, with such external casing, an annular chamber in communication with the at least one air exhaust port of the external casing and closed except for said air discharge port means, at least one outer shell section being formed with air discharge port means, at least one sleeved baffle supported by said shell sections within said annular chamber, said sleeved baffle including a tubular sleeve, adapted to surround such external casing in radially spaced relation therewith, and an annular baffle projecting radially from said tubular sleeve intermediate its ends and having its radially outer periphery engaged between adjacent ends of two shell sections to subdivide said annular chamber, said sleeve defining, with such external casing, an air flow constriction annular passage acoustically coupling the subdivisions of said annular chamber and providing for air flow between said subdivisions, said sleeve extending into a terminal shell section defining, with the end wall thereof, an opening into the associated subdivision of said annular chamber.
A pressure gas operated device, comprising an exhaust conduit for said pressure gas to which the pressure gas flows, means defining at least one substantially annular pressure gas treatment chamber adjacent said exhaust conduit, said treatment chamber having an interior wall bounding said chamber shaped to provide an ordered substantially annular whirling vortex flow to the pressure gas, an air inlet passage part connected to said chamber and defining a constricted flow path for said pressure gas and located to direct the gas against said bounding wall and to effect a wall attachment of the gas so as to begin its formation into a whirling vortex flow, and discharge passage means connected to said treatment chamber defining a gas passage for the controlled flow of the pressure gas to the atmosphere without disturbing the whirling vortex flow.
