A sorting apparatus wherein a plurality of first and second electrical color signals from a predetermined number of viewer elements is utilized to generate classification signals functionally related to the ratio of the color signals from each viewer and an ejector associated with each viewer is actuated if a comparison of each ratio classification signal with predetermined references indicates an unacceptably colored product or foreign object is characterized by a foreign object ejector arrangement being operable if the ratio classification signal falls within a predetermined defined range of signal values. A threshold network actuates the foreign object ejector arrangement only if an article is detected within the field of view of the viewer elements. Circuitry to present a substitute classification signal within the predetermined range of signal values if the electrical color signals are of equal value is provided. Also, a power supply associated with the sorting apparatus is characterized by a capacitive switching arrangement producing positive and negative polarity voltage outputs of a predetermined magnitude from a positive voltage source without the need for transformers or inductors. A non-reflective background region against which light energy reflected from the articles to be sorted is detected is provided. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In apparatus for sorting articles randomly disposed across an article stream, said apparatus having means for generating a first and a second electrical signal representative of light energy reflected from articles to be sorted, means for generating a classification signal functionally related to the ratio of said first and said second electrical signal, wherein the improvement comprises:
In apparatus for sorting articles randomly disposed across an article stream, said apparatus having means for generating a classification signal functionally related to the ratio of electrical signals representative of light energy reflected from articles to be sorted, the improvement comprising a power supply for producing positive and negative polarity voltage outputs at respective positive and negative voltage output posts when a predetermined positive voltage is connected to an input post, said power supply comprising:
In apparatus for sorting a stream of articles randomly disposed across an article conveyor, said apparatus having
In apparatus for sorting articles randomly disposed across an article stream carried on a conveyor, said apparatus having means for viewing an area away from the conveyor through which articles to be sorted pass in free-fall and for generating a first and a second electrical signal representative of light energy reflected from articles to be sorted at corresponding first and second color wavelengths, said apparatus having means for generating a classification signal functionally related to the ratio of said first and said second electrical signals, the improvement comprising a non-structural, non-reflective background region against which light reflected from the articles is detected but not classified, said non-reflective background region imposing no optical bias on said viewing and signal generating means when no article is within the viewed area, said background region being disposed beneath the discharge end of the conveyor.
